PalistroiExploration Point-and-Click Comedy Adventure Game
Palistroi is a very silly point-and-click adventure game where you basically have to figure out what the hell you're supposed to do. The game is purposefully void of any premise, it just starts and you'll have to explore the world for yourself. The game is really just a vessel for a string of stupid jokes and silly situations. I guess there's some kind of thread to it, but just enough to make logical sense. I think it's pretty fair to say a HUGE influence on the game is The Neverhood. Why it got madeI had reached a point in my life where I felt kind of done with my current job as a Project Manager for an IT company and wanted to get back to game development. I made a decision to focus on it full time, so I quit my job and got to work. I had enough saving to last me about a year, and in that time I should be able to make something really cool!
In hindsight, quitting my job just months before a global pandemic suddenly hits might've not been the best choice I've made in life. Follow your dreams, I guess? When thinking about the game, it felt achievable, despite me not having any substantial 3D-modeling experience. The art style was simple enough and point-and-click type game logic didn't seem like the most complex code you could aim to develop. The miscalculationI figured that a game with a simple art style and nonsensical puzzles could be developed fairly fast. And indeed, the first Alpha of the project didn't take long at all!
However, when starting to actually develop for a whole game things went a lot slower than I had first expected. Turns out that 3D-assets, especially animated characters take quite a long time to produce, especially if you're doing all the work yourself. With my personal funds running out, I decided to halt the development once I got a nice Demo out of it. On a brighter noteOne of my goals was to further myself as a game developer. I wanted to get back to developing games and I wanted to do everything.
On that front, this project has been a resounding success. I am a much more confident programmer, I can find my way around all parts of the 3D production pipeline, and I am quite a decent animator. Palistroi's main purpose is to be funny, and so far it's gotten my friends and ex-colleagues to laugh whenever I've shown it to them. The game does what it's supposed to. The only thing lacking is the game time. It will take a "blind" player between 25 and 35 minutes to complete the demo. Download
